Choral reading is a fluency-building practice that can be used instead of the traditional round-robin procedure. Choral Reading actively involves students. Students read in unison either in whole groups, small groups or pairs.
Chunking sentences is another way to build fluency. It's an approach that encourages students to move beyond word-by-word reading. It involves reading phrases, clauses, and sentences by dividing text into chunks. For practice with chunking, divide text into three to four chunks. Do this by placing slash marks where students should pause. Chunking can help students improve prosody as well as comprehension.
