Choral reading is a fluency-building strategy that you can use instead of the traditional round-robin procedure.
In choral reading, students are actively involved as they read in unison as a whole group, in a small group, or in pairs.
Chunking is an approach that encourages students to go beyond word-by-word reading. Chunking involves reading phrases, clauses, and sentences by dividing text into chunks. For chunking practice, divide text into chunks of 3 to 4 words by placing slash marks in places where students should pause. You can model the procedure by initially presenting the correct sequence using sentence strips. For later practice, you can cut apart the sentence strips and have students sequence them.
