Let's review an example of how we adapted Partner Reading. Review the Handout: Adapted Partner Reading lesson plan to see the adaptation. The original Partner Reading activity required students to work in pairs. Deena and a few other struggling students are in a setting where most of their peers are performing at a significantly higher reading level. Because of the large differences in reading levels, appropriate partners for all students could not be identified. The struggling readers were assigned to a small, homogeneous group led by the teacher. This adaptation is categorized as Delivery of Instruction because the teacher's role is now changed from instructional facilitator to reading partner. Note that the adapted Partner Reading requires the teacher to play a more active role with the student. Because this was the only adaptation made, it falls along the less intensive and pervasive end of the continuum.
